They have been closely watching the rising of raw material 系統傢俱skipjack price whichhas reached US$1700, cfr Bangkok and is expected to further strengthen in the near future, pushing canned tuna pricesup. In general, business is currently difficult for importers due to the rising price and environment related issues,particularly the Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) issue which is becoming a hot topic in Europe.Philippines: 商空設計Century Pacific Group, the country’s major canned tuna producer, expects slower sales growth in 2011due to rising production costs and weakening demand in the domestic market. The rise in sales, could be lower than the12%-13% growth recorded in 2010, the company said. The company already implemented a 2-5% price increase inselected products given higher raw 婚紗material and packaging costs. To ensure a long term growth, the company isaggressively tapping overseas markets and building production facilities abroad. Century Pacific sells around 500million canned food products a year which include canned tuna and canned meat. The company, along with foreignpartners, is expanding its factory in tuna-rich Papua New Guinea as a 當舖means to export to Europe. The plant’s capacity iscurrently 120 metric tons (MT) per day and it will increase to 300 to 350 MT early next year, which will allow privatelabel manufacturing for European markets. This export business of private label production and branded sales accountfor about 30% of total revenues.Thailand: Thai Union Frozen Plc (TUF), the world’s 鑽石largest canned tuna producer, reported a 9% fall in netprofit in the first quarter of 2011 to Baht 752.8 million (US$25 million) from Baht 831.2 million (US$27.7 million) lastyear. The drop was due to the highly volatile raw material prices of skipjack, a stronger baht, a higher interest burdenand expenses related to the acquisition of MW Brands. However, its sales 票貼rose significantly by 49% in US dollar termsto US$743 million compared to US$498 million in the first quarter of 2010. Tuna products, in particular, reportedsignificant sales growth both in volume and value terms by 52% and 82% respectively, thanks to the acquisition of MWBrands.
